In 1910, Ramanujan sought the patronage of Mr.
V. Ramaswamy Iyer, an ardent student of mathematics, who
became a Deputy Collector after he completed his studies at Salem.
The ‘Analytical club’ started by him, became the Indian
Mathematical Society, in 1907. Ramanujan’s Notebooks
were his main recommendation for his request for a clerical job.
A scrutiny of the entries in the Notebooks was sufficient to convince
Prof. Ramaswamy Iyer that Ramanujan was a gifted mathematician.
So, he sent Ramanujan back to Madras with a letter of introduction
of Prof. Seshu Aiyar.
