These 
                Notebooks were his treasures, which 
                he showed to convince influential men of his abilities as a mathematician. 
                As the eldest son of the family, he yearned for a job, to eke 
                out a livelihood and to support his parents and two brothers. 
                He tutored a few students in mathematics, in Kumbakonam and sought 
                employment as a tutor in mathematics, but with no success.
