Ramanujan
left Madras by the passenger ship S.S. NEVASA (of British India
Lines) on 17th March 1914. Mr. Arthur Davies and Prof. Littlehailes
attended to all the details regarding Ramanujan’s passage
to England. Prior to his departure, he arranged with the University
for £ 60 (out of Scholarship amount of £ 250 ) a year
to be sent to his parents in Kumbakonam. Thus, he fulfilled his
responsibilities as the eldest son of the family.
