The school had six forms each of which had six sections and each
section had about 40 students. Producing a conflict-free Time
Table for the school was the responsibility of the senior Mathematics
teacher, Mr. Ganapathi Subbier. The mathematics teacher entrusted
the task to Ramanujan who could do it with effortless ease, year
after year.
Being
fond of numbers, Ramanujan should have thought of filling the
tables with only numbers instead of teacher’s names, subjects
and room numbers. Thus, his earliest recorded work, in Chapter
1 of his Note Books is on Magic Squares.
