On
March 19, 1913, the Board of Studies of the University of Madras
met, and Mr. Narayana Iyer was invited (by Prof. B. Hanumanth
Rao, Mathematics Department, Engineering College) to present Ramanujan’s
case to the Board. This resulted in the Board recommending to
the Syndicate Ramanujan for a research scholarship. On April 7,
at a Syndicate meeting this recommendation was debated and it
resulted in the Registrar writing down the resolution: “The
regulations of the University do not at present provide for such
a scholarship. But the Syndicate assumes that Section XV of the
Act of Incorporation and section 3 of the Indian Universities
Act. 1904, allow of the grant of such a scholarship, subject to
the express consent of the Governor of Fort St. George in the
Council.”
