Ramanujan
successfully applied for and got a clerical post in the Accountant
General’s Office (January 12 to February 21, 1912), with
the help of a letter of recomendation
from Professor E.W. Middlemast, who was at that time (1911) the
Acting Principal and Professor of Mathematics at Presidency College,
Chennai.

Narayana Iyer an M.A. from St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirapalli,
was an engineer by training and joined the Madras Port Trust in
1904 along with Sir Francis Spring. He became an office manager
and later the chief accountant of Port Trust. In February 1912,
when Ramanujan applied for a clerical post, Narayana Iyer was
the highest ranking Indian in the Port Trust.
