Understanding disordered systems poses some of the most difficult problems of modern physics. These problems are often interdisciplinary, spanning areas such as pure and applied mathematics as well as computer science. Experimental work in this area is challenging and continues to confront and provoke theory.

This SERC School will provide students the opportunity to explore this exciting field.

Supplementary lectures will be given by Sitabhra Sinha, Gautam Menon and Purusattam Ray (IMSc).
A series of special lectures will also be held. Participants will also be given the opportunity to make brief presentations
on their research work.

Directors: Gautam I. Menon, Purusattam Ray[IMSc]

Interested Ph.D. students working in theoretical/experimental condensed matter physics or statistical mechanics should enclose a C.V with their application, as well as a brief (1 page) summary of their research work and interests. (See below for downloadable application forms in Postscript and PDF formats; filled applications can be sent by ordinary mail to reach the directors before the deadline. Only plain text applications should be sent by email.) A letter of recommendation from the thesis advisor or other suitable referee should also be mailed separately to the Directors. Selected participants will be paid return fare as per DST norms by train (3-tier AC/I Class) and provided accomodation and local hospitality. The deadline for applications to be received is February 15, 2003. Applications/Letters of recommendation may be sent by email (serc5@imsc.res.in) or by post to the following address:
