Participants are housed in two locations: (i) Taramani Guest House in the IIT, Madras campus and (ii) The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai. All participants should already have received letters from us regarding their accomodation and are expected to find their own way to the appropriate location from the station/ bus stop.

Getting to IMSC

You can get to IMSC from the station in one of several ways. The default is to take an auto. Auto's are available in plenty from outside the station. However, beware: Autodrivers in Chennai are notorious for taking their fares for a ride (both literally and metaphorically.) It is best to bargain and fix a rate in advance. Ideally, you should pay between 70 and 80 rupees from the station to get to IMSC. However, numbers for fares are somewhat flexible and you may only find autodrivers who are willing to come for about 90, depending on your skills at negotiation.

Detailed instructions on what to say to the auto/taxi driver to get to IMSC are available from our main page. (All auto/taxi drivers should know IIT). See Getting here

Getting to IIT

IT Madras is located on Sardar Patel Road and is flanked by Adyar, and the Taramani and Velachery villages. The campus is close to the Raj Bhavan. The campus is midway between the Chennai Airport and the Central Railway station and is well connected by buses. It is around 12 kms from the Central Railway station and the central bus depot. Adyar has its own bus terminus as well.

The Institute in itself is located around 2.5 kms inside the campus. Two parallel roads, Bonn Avenue and Delhi avenue, lead you through the residential zone, under a canopy of green, to Gajendra Circle (otherwise called GC) and the administrative block. Buses ply between the gate and other locations on campus at regular intervals. Named after mountains, the IITM buses take you to the GC, academic zone and hostels (named after rivers) for a nominal fare. (This has infact led to the joke that IIT is the land of moving mountains and stationary rivers!) Taramani Guest House where you will be staying is in the Hostel Zone located about 4km from the Main Entrance to IIT Madras.

The IIT campus is located on the Sardar Patel Road, midway between the Raj Bhavan and Adyar bus terminus and is around 12 kms. from Chennai Central Railway Station. Other landmarks include : the Guindy Snake Park near the IIT main gate and the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) campus opposite the IIT campus.

If you have light luggage (a bag or an attache) you could consider taking a bus to IIT. The bus stop is just across the road from the Central Railway Station. You could use the subway to cross the road which is perpetually busy. There are direct buses to IIT, which start at the Central Station bus stop. If you take any of them, get down at Gandhi Mandapam, which is at walking distance from the IIT main gate. Otherwise, take any bus to Saidapet and from there, any bus heading for Adyar or Besant Nagar which will drop you right in front of the IIT gate. You could also take any bus to Adyar; there are frequent buses from Adyar Signal to the campus.

Once you reach the In gate, there are buses to Gajendra Circle (near the administrative block and Central Library), the academic zone and the hostels (they are around 3.8 kms from the main gate!) almost every 30 minutes. If you have luggage, an auto-rickshaw or taxi would it would be the most comfortable option. The fare will be about Rs. 90 for an auto-rickshaw and Rs. 170 for a taxi.

If you arrive at Egmore Station, you could take buses to IIT, Gandhi Mandapam or Adyar from where there are number of buses to the IIT. Current auto-rickshaw and taxi fares from Egmore are approximately Rs.75 and Rs.150 respectively.

The SERC School will reimburse your auto fare from the station. However, if you are travelling in a group of more than 1, it is advantageous to take a call taxi from the station and split the cost. Call taxis are available from a little further away, by the side of the booking office/suburban train station, which is the large building to the right of the station as you exit. Call taxis function by the meter. Pay the meter fare. It should come to about 140 rupees to IMSc, not much less and not much more.
