10. How much rock will be excavated?

The total volume of rock to be excavated (all tunnels, laboratories, parking etc) is estimated to be less than 400,000 cubic meters. Most of this rock will be removed from the construction site and the remainder will be used as gravel in the construction of the tunnel road. The actual volume while being removed will be about 1.6 times this since crushed rock occupies more space than compact rock. The resulting volume that should be removed is about 600,000 cubic meters.

Many steps may be taken to minimise the impact of trucking including: maintaining quiet times from evening through early morning; caravanning trucks; using modern, quieter, low-emissions trucks.
