K.S. Krishnan Popular Science Lecture

Madras Christian College
Tambaram, Chennai - 600059

Sir K S Krishnan was one of the most illustrious scientists of India.

A co-discoverer of Raman effect,   Krishnan has several discoveries
to his credit, in a wide range of 'Quantum Phenomena' in
condensed
matter. He was a great populariser of
science, and a selfless enthusiast
           who shared his science
liberally with young students, from various colleges,
           first as
a student and later as a young teacher at Madras Christian College.

To reach college students, Institute of Mathematical Sciences,
K.S. Krishnan Memorial Trust and Madras Christian College, Chennai
are sponsoring a popular science lecture series to be delivered
by distinguished scientists. The lectures will be held at MCC.

The lecture will be given by
Professor R.Shankar

Climate Change:
The Scientific Basis

Date : 2:00 PM, 18th December, 2007.
Venue : Physics Department, Madras Christian College, Chennai.

About the Topic and Speaker :
In the past decade or so, it has been firmly established that human
activities has resulted in a steady warming of the atmosphere. The
consequent change in the climate is likely to have harmful and may
be even disasterous consequences for human society. Climate science
is clearly going to be a very important field of research in this century.
This talk will review the scientific evidence for global warming and
climate change. The scientific questions the phenomenon throws up and
the science involved in attempting to answer them will then be described.

Professor R. Shankar, is a member of a small group of theoretical physicists
at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences who have recently started working
on some aspects of climate science. They collaborate with scientists at the
HNB Garhwal University, Uttarakhand, to mathematically model the recession of Himalayan glaciers.
