The context: The broad goal of IMSc's Enriching Collegiate Education series of workshops is to bring research mathematicians and college teachers together in an effort to enrich mathematics education in colleges. It is noteworthy in this context that IMSc is primarily a research institute. This particular workshop was held as a Teacher's Enrichment Workshop, one of a series sponsored by the NCM.

Topics and speakers: The week-long workshop was aimed at mathematics teachers at arts and science colleges, to enable them to revisit and update content knowledge. The lectures covered some particular topics (see below). Discussion hours offered opportunities to get doubts cleared and work out exercises (both routine and advanced).

List of speakers:

  • S Kesavan (IIT, Madras): Multivariate Calculus: Continuity, partial differentiation, maxima-minima, Lagrange multipliers, multiple integrals, applications. Reference: Mathematical Analysis by Tom M Apostol.
    Videos of Professor Kesavan's lectures

  • Vijay Kodiyalam (IMSc): Abstract Algebra: Fundamental theorem of finitely generated abelian groups, isomorphism theorems, Burnside theorem, Sylow theorems. Reference: A first course in Algebra by John B Fraleigh.
    Notes

  • K N Raghavan (IMSc): Linear algebra: Use of polynomials in linear algebra. References: Linear Algebra---A geometric approach by S Kumaresan; Linear Algebra by Kenneth Hoffman and Ray Kunze;
    Exercise set 1 PDF, Exercise set 2 PDF, Exercise set 3 PDF, Exercise set 4 PDF, Exercise set 5 PDF.

Food, accommodation, and travel:

The workshop was free. A working lunch (and tea, coffee, snacks) was provided on all days of the workshop to all participants free of cost.

For about twenty participants from outside Chennai, accommodation was arranged in the CMI student hostel. (CMI graciously waived the payment of room rent.) Otherwise, accommodation and travel arrangements were left entirely to the participants. There were no reimbursements for expenses (whether towards accommodation or travel) and no payment of any per diem.
