Primary Science: A Discussion Meeting

This seminar hopes to bring in and discuss various experiences of teachers, textbook authors and translators, educators, and scientists so that we could think openly about a better science and math learning experience for our primary students.

Day 1 - June 20

9:30 - 11:00 Constructing a Science Curriculum

Speakers: Jayashree Ramadas, Suchitra Ramkumar

Discussion with participants on designing a curriculum: setting broad goals, clarifying the role and purpose of textbooks for EVS at the primary level, and working out a well-grounded process of textbook and other material development.

Speakers: Eden Educational Center, Al Qamar Academy, Vedavalli School Teachers

Question/answer session with educators who have used Small Science

14:00 - 15:30 Emerging perspectives in Elementary Science and Mathematics

Speakers: Aisha Kawalkar, Sindhu Mathai, Aneesa Jamal

3 talks of 20 minutes each, followed by questions and discussion. The idea in this session is to suggest the role of research in informing curriculum development and textbook writing. Broadly the talks would introduce three different but related perspectives: Critical constructivism (Aneesa), Funds of knowledge (Aisha), Interdisciplinarity (Sindhu).

Review and reflection on sessions over the workshop. Followed by a discussion on what can be taken forward in terms of curriculum, textbook design, defining learning outcomes.
