Motivation

The stability of complex ``ecosystems'' is central to the study of communities of interacting components, such as:

Question:

How does the stability of systems with many interacting components change as a function of `species' diversity and the strength of interactions ?

Theory (Robert May, 1972):

An ecosystem can become unstable against perturbations when its complexity increases beyond a certain value.

But this view seems to be contradicted by actual observations of real ecosystems.

This is the basis for the Stability vs. Diversity debate in ecology
