Memories of ``Sir'' :

Ranjan Ray (April 14, 1949-August 30, 2001)

Ranjan Ray ``DR. RANJAN RAY, Head of the Department of Physics, St. Xavier's College, Calcutta, passed away on 30th August , 2001 after a cerebral stroke. 

He was also the former Assistant Director of St. Xavier's Computer Centre and one of the founder members of the Computer Centre. He also served as a member of the editorial committee of The Physics Teacher, published by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers. 

Dr. Ray received his PhD in solid state theoretical physics from the University of Oregon in 1978, with a thesis on observable properties of crystalline electrons in magnetic fields. He was a member of the American Physical Society, Indian Physical Society, Indian Association of Physics Teachers and Computer Society of India.''

Biography of Prof. Ranjan Ray

On September 3, 2002, a meeting was organised in the Department of Physics, St Xavier's College in memory of Prof. Ranjan Ray. Prof. Jishnu Dey of the Department of Physics, Maulana Azad College, Calcutta (who was also Ranjan Ray's uncle) briefly reminisced on the life of Prof. Ray. This was followed by a talk dedicated in memory of Prof. Ray given by noted mathematical physicist Prof. N. Mukunda (IISc, Bangalore) on Complex numbers and phases in quantum mechanics.

The Ranjan Ray Memorial Lecture organised by the St Xavier's College took place on September 7, 2002. The speaker was Prof. P. N. Ghosh of Calcutta University who gave a semi-popular talk on Bose-Einstein Condensation.
