Kolkata (Calcutta) is capital city of the state of West Bengal, which is well known for its cultural life and heritage: a city of great poets, writers, musicians, filmmakers and scientists; e.g., Rabindranath Tagore (the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize), Satyajit Ray (the creator of such movie classics as "Ballad of the Road" and "Charulata"), Ravishankar (the sitar maestro), C. Weather:

The climate in Calcutta in January is usually pleasant: day temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius (64 F) and night temperature is around 12 degrees Celsius (53 F). Rain is rare in January.

Travel Information:

Air:
Calcutta has an international airport, but few international flights arrive at Calcutta directly. Usually one has to take a connecting flight to Calcutta (Kolkata) after arriving at Delhi or Mumbai (Bombay) airport from abroad. The airport is about 10 km away from the Saha Institute and taxi services are regularly available at the Calcutta airport (take pre-paid taxi if possible from the airport itself).
Price: less than INR 150 (less than US $ 3.5).
Time required: about 1/2 an hour (during rush hours).

Train:
Calcutta is well connected by train with all major cities of India. The train stations are in Howrah (on the opposite side of the river Ganga; about 12 km away) and Sealdah (about 6 km away).
