'Lost' Notebook

Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, a distinguished Library Scientist and Librarian of the University of Madras tabled a resolution at a meeting of the Indian Mathematical Society in Delhi, in 1954, that Ramanujan’s Notebooks should be edited and published. Dr. K.S. Krishnan intervened and suggested that to be effective to achieve this objective, the country’s Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, may be approached. This was the genesis of eventually the Tata Trust agreeing to the suggestion of Dr. K. Chandrasekhar and Dr. Homi J. Bhabha (Director) of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, to bring out a Facsimile/Photostat edition of the 3 Notebooks of Ramanujan in 1957, bound in 2 Volumes. One thousand copies were published for the benefit of the research workers and institutions.
