The formidable task of truly editing the notebooks -viz. to either
prove each of the results or provide references to the literature
where the proofs may be found - which was started by G. N. Watson
and B. M. Wilson but never completed, was taken up in right earnest
by Prof. Bruce C. Berndt, who has been publishing a series of
papers, since 1981, by himself or in collaboration with others,
including Indian mathematicians Padmini T. Joshi, C. Adiga and
S. Bhargava. He has also utilized the earlier work of G.N. Watson
and B.M. Wilson on the notebooks with the Trinity College. This
dedicated work of Berndt, published by Springer-Verlag, is now
available in five parts, the first of which appeared in 1985 and
the fifth, in 1997.
