T. JAYARAMAN's HOME PAGE
Welcome to my home page.
I am a theoretical high-energy physicist working at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences,
Chennai, (formerly known as
Madras), India.
This page will carry in course of time a variety
of material on a number of topics including my professional work and
other subjects of interest to me .
I will also put up lists of links to sites that I find interesting
so that others with similar interests may use them.
Warning: This is in powerpoint. Here is a doc
file version of the text of the presentation. The presentation
was made at a NIAS seminar on
National Conference on
India's Competitiveness and Preparedness in Science & Technology
for the Coming Decades (Issues, Challenges And Strategies)
26 & 27 October 2005.
Alan Sokal, Professor of Physics at New York University, exposed the
shallowness of much of "post-modernist" critiques of science when he
successfully submitted a hoax article entitled "Transgressing the
Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity"
to the journal "Social Text" . This article was accepted and published.
Soon after Sokal himself revealed the hoax in an article in another
journal "Lingua Franca". Sokal's blow at superficial anti-science attitudes
masquerading as a serious social critique of science has been devastating.
In India, if post-modernism is not so common, anti-science attitudes
arising from cultural relativist, "eco-feminist", or plain old
religious obscurantist ideas are common enough.
This link provides a set of articles, reports
and notes on the Sokal affair and the debate that has followed.
These are draft versions of some articles that I have written and
published,
mostly on science and society
issues.
A few reviews that you may find of interest.
And before wishing you good luck I leave you with a self-portrait.
