Dear Subadhra Jagannathan:

Thank you for your interest in graduate study at Virginia Tech. Let me take a moment to tell you about the opportunities for graduate study at Virginia Tech and the support which the university offers its graduate students. The university offers 76 master's and 61 doctoral degree programs in eight academic colleges. Virginia Tech is classified as a Research I institution, the top category for major U.S. research institutions. We have several interdisciplinary research centers and consistently rank in the top 50 universities in terms of research activity.

At Virginia Tech, graduate students are an important and valued part of the academic community. We view graduate education as a partnership between our graduate students and our highly qualified faculty. The partnership is facilitated by more than 3,500 active research projects and provides significant opportunities for intellectual growth and professional development. Graduates of the Virginia Tech are employed at many top universities and colleges, businesses and industries, research facilities, and governmental agencies. Our international students are a significant part of the student body, making up approximately 25% of the graduate student population each year. To assist you, we provide a full range of academic and legal services through the Graduate School and Cranwell International Center.

As an international student, you are eligible for financial assistance from the university. Each year approximately 30% of our international students receive some form of financial support. Some academic departments however, do not award financial support during a student's first year of study. You may also wish to visit the university's home page at http://www.vt.edu/. From that site, you can access the online Graduate Catalog, department and program information, and information about the university and the Blacksburg community.

In the associated pages, you will find instructions on how to complete the Application for Graduate Study. Again, thank you for your interest in Virginia Tech. I look forward to receiving your application.

Sincerely yours,

John L. Eaton
Associate Provost for Graduate Studies
