Instructions for completing your Application for Graduate Study: International Applicants

Cover Letter. Please read the cover letter from John L. Eaton, Associate Provost of Graduate Studies.
  1. Application for Graduate Study. Print and complete the Application for Graduate Study. Please use your full name and not initials. Please be sure that the name on your transcript matches the name on your application.
  2. Application for Graduate Assistantships, Fellowships, and Departmental Placement. Print, complete, and sign the Application for Graduate Assistantships, Fellowships, and Departmental Placement. All applicants must complete this part of the application. If you are applying for full time graduate study, you will be considered for all forms of fellowships and assistantships. You must complete a separate Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for government loans and federal workstudy. You may apply online.
  3. Letters of Reference. Print and complete the upper portion of the Reference Report for Applicant for each reference report that is required. Have each reference complete the bottom portion and return it to the Graduate School before the deadline.
  4. TOEFL Scores. The Graduate School requires all international students who have not received their undergraduate degrees from a British or North American university to furnish the results of the TOEFL examination. The official results of these examinations must be furnished to Virginia Tech by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). A copy of your test results sent with your application is not sufficient. The Graduate School will not issue an I-20 or IAP-66 without official TOEFL scores.
  5. GRE and other supporting documents. Official results of the GRE are required by the Graduate School consideration of your application. Please see the requirements for GRE as well as information concerning departments which require the advanced GRE in addition to the regular examination. Applicants to the College of Business must take the GMAT. You should request the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send the results of all tests directly to the Graduate School. Virginia Tech's institutional code is 5859. Results of the GMAT, however, should be sent directly to the R.B. Pamplin College of Business. The Graduate School will not issue an I-20 or IAP-66 without official GRE scores.
  6. Academic Transcripts. You must submit official transcripts for all academic work completed. The only exception is for academic work completed at Virginia Tech. Send a copy of your transcript and request that two official copies of transcripts from universities or colleges where you received a degree be sent directly to the Graduate School (address below). Please include your US Social Security Number on these transcripts if you have one.
  7. Resume. Please enclose an up-to-date resume.
  8. Financial Certification Form. The Financial Certification Form must be submitted by all applicants.
  9. Application Fee. An application fee of US $45 is required before your application can be processed. Please be sure to place your name and Social Security Number or Application Number 990-00-6376 on the lower left hand corner of any check, international money order, or bank draft. Make your US $45 CHECK OR BANK MONEY ORDER payable to the "Treasurer of Virginia Tech." If you are requesting that a relative or a friend pay this fee for you, please send the application directly to your friend or relative and ask that person to forward both the application and the fee to this office. To pay by credit card print the form the end of the application.
  10. Deadlines. We strongly encourage you to send your completed application as early as possible, preferably by mid-December for applicants for the following Fall term. For full consideration for financial aid, applications for Fall admission should by received by January 15. The Graduate School will notify you of the status of your application and you can expect an admissions decision eight to ten weeks after receipt of all your application materials.
  11. Transfer students. If you wish to transfer to Virginia Tech from another US institution, follow the transfer procedures provided.
  12. Mailing Instructions. Mail your application forms, all supporting materials, and US $45 to:
