The Crab Nebula is a famous supernova remnant in the constellation Taurus, about 6,500 light-years away. It resulted from a massive star's explosion that was observed by many astronomers in 1054 AD. It's a beautiful, complex cloud of expanding gas and dust surrounding a central neutron star, or pulsar, which spins rapidly and emits pulsed radiation, acting like a cosmic lighthouse. Also shown is the eagle in flight, taken from a helicopter. Photo credits: Wikipedia and Travel and Leisure.
