Retreat of the Gangotri Glacier The false-colour image shows the Gangotri glacier, in the Uttarkashi district of Garhwal Himalayas. Currently 30.2 km long and 0.5-2.5 km wide, it is one of the largest glaciers in the Himalayas. Although it has been retreating since 1780, the rate increased after 1971. Over the last 75 years it has receded more than 850 ms, with a recession of 76 m in the three years from 1996 to 1999 alone. Image couretesy NASA, Earth Observatory.
