RULES FOR THE MESS AND MESS-MANAGERS

Mess members are requested to follow these rules to ensure the smooth functioning of the mess. The mess runs largely on the understanding that all members are honest and are considerate about their fellow members. Nothing is transferable. The (M-*) series highlights the rules for Mess-Managers.

  1. Only the following can become a member of the mess:

There will be two categories of members--Regular and Non-Regular. Only JRF, PDF and Faculty have the option of being a Regular member. Rest are by default Non-Regular.

(M-1) Mess-managers should ensure `above said' before accommodating a new member.

Non-Regular will be charged at a rate of 1.25 times that of the Regular.

  2. Regular members will manage the mess. A tentative schedule for 6 months will be fixed beforehand. If, for some reason somebody is unable to take up the mess according to the schedule, it will be his/her responsibility to find a replacement.

  3. The computer chart will have 3 fields for each day, one each for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cancellation can be done by making the appropriate field entry `0' before the following timings.

    Breakfast/Whole day - 2 p.m, previous day
    Lunch - 9 a.m, same day
    Dinner - 4 p.m, same day

Members can have their default fields set by selecting the ``DEFAULT'' option.

Upon non-availability of food, the member can request for a cancellation with the mess managers. Cancellation can be done if the food gets over by 9.30 a.m for breakfast, 2 p.m for lunch and 9.00 p.m for dinner.

(M-2) Mess managers decision will be final in this regard.

  4. Any extra meal (those not entered in the database), can be taken only after asking the mess manager.

(M-3) Mess manager may allow extra meal to be taken depending on availability.

Members are allowed only one glass/tumbler--belonging to mess or same measure--of tea/coffee/milk. Any extra can be had only after 9.30 a.m/5 p.m. and should be marked as extra.

  5. Single breakfast, lunch and dinner shall be charged 0.25, 0.45 and 0.45 times the basic respectively. For Non-Regular it will be 1.2 times that of the above rates.

People who take at least two out of the three meals (B,L,D) can have tea/coffee and snacks. Otherwise, one has to enter those as extras using the ``EXTRA'' option.

  6. (M-4) Mess managers have to give the cooks the number of people having a particular meal and the required provision.

  7. An Extra's note book will be available to enter extras other than tea, coffee, milk, egg and noodles. Note that you should bring your own pen.

The member can't decide the cost of snacks and other extras had from the mess. For instance, if you have a Samosa as extra you will write (in the extra's note provided) as ``One Samosa'' and not, say, Rs. 6.

  8. Members can have guests except that they should change their defaults accordingly. Tea, coffee, snacks etc. are extras for the guest unless the guest takes at least two meals in the day.

  9. Those who take all the meals in a day are entitled two eggs per day. Those who take at least two meals in a day are entitled for one egg and also snacks. Only one egg is allowed during lunch (eggs are not transferable!!). Every other egg taken will be extra and has to be entered as an extra.

  10. Extra dessert for dinner can be had only after 9.30 p.m .

(M-5) The amount of dessert allowed per person will be quoted by the mess managers.

  11. All long term mess members should have a deposit of Rs. 2000 . Deposit for short term visitors should be at least Rs. 60 times the tentative duration of stay.

(M-6) The mess managers must instruct short term visitors to read the mess rules at the time of their joining the mess.

  12. (M-7) Mess bill for a particular month should be put up by the 7th of next month, failing which the mess managers will have to pay a fine of Rs. 25 for each day delayed.

  13. Mess advance for a particular month should be paid by 10th of the month. Negative balance is not encouraged. Defaulter will be fined at a rate of Rs. 5 per day per Rs. 100 negative balance till they clear the balance.

  14. Non-members are not allowed to take left-over foods in any form.

  15. (M-8) No Mess-Manager has the right to modify/change an existing rule. He/She can only impose the existing rule efficiently. If need of new rule is felt they can approach the hostel committee who will in-turn call a GBM (General Body Meeting) to discuss the issue.

Please avoid wastage. In case of any doubts or ambiguity in the rules contact the hostel committee.
