dc.description.abstract It is shown that in order that symmetry considerations be applicable to resonances occurring between the thresholds connected by the symmetry principle, the modulus of the momentum in any channel should be smaller or at least not much greater than the inverse of the range of the interaction. For the state N32, simple potential models are constructed which show that this condition is satisfied thus explaining why SU3 symmetry is approximately valid for the p3/2 states {Mathematical expression} and Ω- in spite of the large mass splittings in the baryon and meson octet. Finally it is shown that for these p3/2 states the symmetry violations in the matrix K′=k-1Kk-1 obey the group-theoretical perturbation formulae whereas the same is not true for the matrix T′ defined in a similar manner from the T-matrix. © 1965 Società Italiana di Fisica.
