1982 - Annual Report

Abstract

The Twentieth Anniversary of the Institute was celebrated on the 21st January 1982. A symposium on “Fundamental Research - Source and Sustenance of Technology” was inaugurated by Professor M. Santappa, Vice-Chancellor of the Madras University who also unveiled the portraits of Prof, Paul Erdos and Prof. G. H. Hardy and delivered the Anniversary address. Besides the members of MATSCIENCE, Prof. K. P. Rajappan of I. I. T., Madras, Prof. P. M. Mathews of the University of Madras and Dr. Vyas of the Government General Hospital, Madras, gave lectures at the symposium on the role of Fundamental Research in Technology, Science and Medicine respectively. Matscience conducted a conference on Special and General Relativity and Applications at Mysore during 18 - 21 February, 1982. Inaugurating the conference Prof. Alladi Ramakrishnan gave a simple, fresh and hitherto unobserved method of looking at the Lorentz transformation and explained how it eliminates some of the well known ‘paradoxes’ in special relativity. About 30 active workers in this field from several parts of the country participated in the conference. A conference on ‘Probability, Stochastic Processes and Applications’ was conducted at the Hindustan Photo Films Club House at Ooty from 23rd to 27th November, 1982. Several active scientists working in the area presented papers on their recent work. A conference on ‘Relativity, Gravitation and their Ramifications’ was conducted at Mysore from 29th November to December 3, 1982. Professor Alladi Ramakrishnan who inaugurated the conference pointed out how various features of Special Theory of Relativity can be easily and clearly understood using the concept of exterior relative velocity.
