This is the 2023 edition of the institute's outreach program for advanced undergraduate (BSc third year) and postgraduate (MSc) students of mathematics.

However, students in other scientific or engineering disciplines with a background in college level mathematics can also apply.

  • Let them share with you the excitement of doing mathematics, teaching mathematics, and using mathematics in other areas.

9:30 - 11:00 Permutations which avoid patterns

Permutations of 'n' are just ways of rearranging the numbers from 1 to 'n'. But what if we had to do this in such a way that certain forbidden configurations don't occur ? For example, we could demand that no three consecutive entries be in ascending order. These form part of the study of "pattern-avoiding permutations" and I will describe many fascinating problems, solutions and connections to seemingly unrelated parts of mathematics.

11:30 - 13:00 Interactions between Logic and Computability

Theory of computation is a subject that deals with 'what can be algorithmically solved'. It deals with questions like ”given a problem, is there an algorithm that can solve it”. The origin of the subject can be traced back to the legendary work of Kurt Gödel. Even though first incompleteness theorems that Gödel proved dealt with logic and proofs, the techniques there formed the basis of what we call a computation or algorithm. Since its inception, theory of computation and logic have had a symbiotic relationship. In the talk, we will explore some of these connections.

14:00 - 15:30 From the Braid Group to the Trefoil Knot

Sushmita Venugopalan, IMSc

The set of braids that can be made using n strings forms a group called the n-strand braid group. In this talk, I will introduce braid groups and we will work out the two-strand and three-strand braid groups. We will also explore a connection between the three-strand braid group and the complement of the trefoil knot in three-dimensional space. And surprisingly this journey will rely on cubic polynomials.
