Somitogenesis is a process in which blocks of cells called somites are periodically segmented from the posterior mesoderm of a developing embryo. This segmental pattern of somites gives rise to the periodic arrangement of vertebrae in vertebrates. In this talk I will present in brief the mechanism of somite formation in the zebrafish model. I will discuss how a morphogen gradient encodes the positional information of the somite boundaries and the existence of a segmentation clock that stamps the somite boundaries periodically in space and time.
