Tate's conjecture and poles of L-functions

A famous conjecture of Tate predicts the order of pole associated to L-functions of smooth projective varieties. We will describe this conjecture and its motivation. We will also describe recent work with Anup Dixit which proves a stability property that would be a consequence of Tate's conjecture.
