Non-coding RNAs and regulation of epigenome

A large percentage of human genome is transcribed into non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) that are not translated into proteins. Recent studies demonstrate that ncRNAs are often involved many fundamental biological processes and are dysregulated during diseased conditions. A large number of cancer-associated genome variations are also found in ncRNA genes. In spite of this, functional mechanisms of these ncRNAs largely remain enigmatic. However, examples suggest that a number of them act as novel regulators of gene expression. Studies suggest that ncRNAs are involved in regulating epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation and histone modifications. In my lab, we are studying the interplay between ncRNAs, chromatin modifying machinery and epigenome. I will present our recent work demonstrating how ncRNAs regulate epigenome and genome integrity.
