From electrons to fractional Hall states via gauge invariance

Abhishek Agarwal, Physical Review Letters, American Physical Society and Department of Physics and Astronomy Lehman College of the City University of New York (CUNY), Bronx

I will present a new route to the derivation of the iconic
Laughlin and Jain wave functions based on a reformulation of
non-relativistic electronic dynamics in terms of gauge-invariant
observables. This reformulation - based on an approach to gauge theories in
D=2+1 due to Karabali, Kim, and Nair - trades fluxes for vortices and gauge
symmetry for an emergent holomorphic invariance. Using holomorphic
invariance as a governing principle, I will outline how planar and
spherical Laughlin and Jain wave functions can be derived entirely within a
mean-field approximation.
