Forces on objects immersed in active fluids

Objects immersed in active fluids may experience a force or a torque depending on their shape. We show that in a periodic system, this force/torque is sustained by the vorticity of the polarization that is localized around the object. We find that the system size L greatly influences the force, which increases as L^2 before plateauing. Furthermore, we relate this force to the particle current away from the object and corroborate our theoretical results with simulations of active Brownian particles.
