Word problem in finite classical Chevalley groups

Anupam Kumar Singh

IISER, Pune

Chevalley constructed groups of Lie type starting from complex
simple Lie algebras. That also gave a presentation for the groups. Using
Bruhat decomposition one can write any element of these groups in normal
form. In this talk we will describe an algorithm to solve the word problem
for classical Chevalley groups in similar line to the row-column operations
for $SL(n,q)$. We will illustrate this by taking example of $C_l$ type. This is
joint work with Ayan Mahalanobis.
