In 1881, at the age of seventeen, Sir Asutosh Mookerjee published his first research paper on Geometry in the Messenger of Mathematics (Cambridge). That was the beginning of research in Geometry in the Indian subcontinent.
The state of Bengal was fortunate in getting four outstanding mathematicians who made enormous research contributions in various branches of Geometry. There were many others who did very good work in these fields. But in the present course of lectures, the focus will be on the pioneers, led by Sir Asutosh Mookerjee and followed by Dr. Syamadas Mukhopadhyay, Professor R. N. Sen and Professor M. C. Chaki. A brief review of their overall contributions will be made with special emphasis on one or two aspects of their important research outputs.
