The Subspace Theorem in Diophantine Approximation

Hans-Peter Schlickewei

University of Marburg, Germany

The Subspace Theorem deals with simultaneous approximation of algebraic
numbers by rational numbers.

In the talk I will first give a historical survey on the development of
the subject.
In particular, I will discuss the p-adic generalization of the theorem.

In the second part of the talk I will give examples of applications to
diophantine equations, culminating in the result of J.H.Evertse,
W.M.Schmidt and myself on the intersection of a linear torus with a
multiplicative group of finite rank.
