A trick of Diaconis and primitive polynomials over finite fields

I will present a card trick of Diaconis and then explain its
connections with de Bruijn sequences, primitive polynomials over finite
fields and linear feedback shift registers. I will also discuss the problem
of counting certain elements of maximum possible order in the general linear
group over a finite field.
