Multiplicity-free Restrictions for Symmetric Groups

I will prove that an irreducible representation of the permutation
group of n elements, when restricted to the permutation group of n-1
elements, is multiplicity-free. This result plays an important role in
the Okounkov-Vershik approach to the representation theory of
symmetric groups.
