The beginnings of particle physics in India will be described in a non-technical, anecdotal way, focusing on some towering personalities and their contributions. The story will roughly cover the first half of the 20th century, a period of national and international turmoil and larger-than-life characters. At the end some morals will be drawn from the tale.
