Information restriction in model gene regulatory networks

Information processing is of utmost importance in biological networks for understanding how the networks operate in sensing the extracellular as well as intracellular signals. A middle biochemical node in a two-step cascade motif retains some information in its environment while information is processed from upstream to downstream. We have quantified the amount of information retention (restriction) by that middle node. We then connect the information restriction with the fluctuations level and fidelity of the two-step cascade.
