String loop amplitudes and U-duality: Lecture 1

I shall discuss some loop amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric
string theory. These provide perturbative data for U-duality covariant
S-matrix elements which lead to certain terms in the low energy effective
action. This leads to an interplay between worldsheet and spacetime
techniques which sometimes lead to exact results in string theory which is
a consequence of supersymmetry.
