Exotic structures on manifolds

The study of manifolds in differential topology presents
itself through four different classes of equivalence : homotopy
equivalence, homeomorphism, PL homeomorphism and diffeomorphism. The
classification of manifolds upto these equivalences is a fundamental
question in geometry and topology. In particular, the classification
of smooth structures is of great interest in Differential geometry and
topology. In the first half of the talk, I shall give an overview on
exotic spheres and exotic structures on manifolds. In the later part
of the talk , I shall discuss one technique to detect exotic smooth
structures on “locally symmetric spaces” developed by F.T. Farrell,
L.E. Jones and B.Okun.
