IMSc Webinar
The 2020 Nobels and a history of genome editing
Rahul Siddharthan
IMSc Chennai
I will review the idea of genome editing and the evolution of the CRISPR-Cas editing system from the discovery of CRISPR repeats in E.coli in 1987 to an understanding of how this system targets phages and plasmids in bacteria to how it was re-engineered for editing other genomes, including the human genome, by Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier, winning them the Breakthrough Prize in 2015 and the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2020. I will discuss other significant contributions, controversies about credit and patents, and ethical issues in human use.
