Discovering Novel Phases of Dense Matter in Neutron Stars with Gravitational Waves

Prashanth Jaikumar

California State University Long Beach

Neutron stars contain matter at extremely high density and gravitational waves from neutron stars can help us discover new forms of matter. I will present an overview of the principal non-radial oscillations of neutron stars, and discuss a unique signature of a mixed phase of neutron and quark matter inside the star based on g-mode oscillations. I will also discuss the impact of a mixed phase on the tidal polarizability of neutron stars and present estimates of g-mode damping in neutron-rich matter and quark matter.
