The deep structure of the proton in the LHC era

We review the status and the precision of the proton structure
as described in the collinear factorization approach in quantum chromodynamics QCD.
We discuss the need to advance the computation of perturbative corrections to hard
scattering processes in QCD to higher orders so as to match the accuracy of
experimental data measured at the Large Hadron Collider LHC.
We illustrate the challenges for current theoretical predictions
and we outline areas for future improvements.
