A Tale of Waves and Eddies in a sea of Rotating Turbulence

Amrik Sen

TIFR, Hyderabad

Waves, eddies and turbulence play key roles in several atmospheric, oceanic and
planetary phenomena. In this talk, I will introduce several interesting aspects of
rotating turbulent flows. I will present some observational results of turbulent cascade
power laws of relevant invariant quantities of such flows. I will then deduce a rigorous
theoretical model based on a multi-scale approach to explain the cascade picture
in a highly anisotropic limit of rapid rotation. The calculations are accomplished by
employing the principle of Hamiltonian reduction and symmetry arguments, and then
extended to the fully asymmetric helical case. I will summarize with a few open questions
in this field.
