Rocks, rivers, and sand: simple models of complex systems

I will discuss how simple models can describe the phenomenology of complex systems. I will illustrate the idea with three
simple models of fragmenting ice sheets, river networks, and sand piles. It also helps uncover some relationships between apparently unrelated phenomena.
