Persistent Active Fluids

Suman Dutta

NCBS, Bangalore

Living matter is active in that it is, at the scale of its constituents, driven by steady energy inputs that are transduced into movement. Many of the mechanical features of active matter are realized as a collection of interacting particles, each of which is stochastically driven by energy inputs. I will talk about an extreme state of active matter, namely persistent active matter at high densities. We show that this displays unusual fluid state properties at high densities, including velocity sorting and an approach to criticality that is preempted by a kind of turbulence.
