Abstract | Quantum spin Hall insulators, like InAs/GaSb quantum wells, have an insulating bulk and conductive edge, and are topologically distinct from normal insulators and semiconductors. When Coulomb interactions are introduced into these systems, there appears a time-reversal symmetry (TRS) broken phase due to excitons in the topological phase diagram. This TRS broken insulating phase appears in between the normal and quantum spin Hall phase and leads to an unconventional topological phase transition without a bulk-gap closing. We perform a numerical quantum transport study on a Corbino disc that confirms the presence of the TRS broken phase due to excitons. Furthermore, we utilize this TRS broken phase along with a superconductor to realize Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at the interface without the typically required external magnetic field or ferromagnetic insulators. We also propose an experimental setup of a Josephson junction to observe these exotic MZMs which arise due to excitons in these systems |
