Euler Kronecker constants and the generalized Brauer-Siegel conjecture

The Euler-Mascheroni constant $\gamma$ is ubiquitous in number theory and other areas of mathematics. As a natural generalization of $\gamma$, Y. Ihara introduced the Euler-Kronecker constant $\gamma_K$ attached to a number field $K/\mathbb{Q}$. The class number of $K$ captures how far the ring of integers of $K$ is from being a PID. This talk will be centred around the surprising appearance of $\gamma_K$ in the study of class numbers in a tower of number fields.
