Medical Challenges: Exploring High Intensity Focused Ultrasound through Mathematical & Computational Modelling

Sivabal Sivaloganathan

University of Toronto

Despite the dramatic advances (over the past five decades) resulting from the interaction of the Biomedical and Mathematical Sciences, daunting challenges persist. These range from complex physiological dysfunctions to the challenges posed by formidable diseases, such as cancer. However, amidst these challenges there are promising avenues for breakthroughs, with novel therapies like High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) offering transformative potential. In this talk, I will give a very brief, idiosyncratic survey of the medical challenges that confront us today, illuminating the path forward with the revolutionary promise of HIFU and the crucial role of mathematical/computational modelling in understanding and harnessing its capabilities.
