Exploring cousins of quantum electrodynamics using classical and quantum simulations
Debasish Banerjee
Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics
The advent of new techniques of classical and quantum simulations promise
a new era in the studies of strongly interacting theories. In the talk, we explore
the physics of interesting cousins of quantum electrodynamics (QED).
Applied to condensed matter systems in lower dimensions, these models
describe the physics of quantum spin-ice, as well as high-temperature
superconductors and spin liquids. In the context of particle physics, these
models allow for the realistic quantum simulation of the Schwinger model.
These theories also show the presence of new phases, such as crystalline
and nematic confinement, and novel phenomena such as flux fractionalization,
whose dynamics can be well explored in quantum simulators.
